What are the must-see attractions in Tropical North Queensland?
A huge region, for most their Tropical North Queensland experience starts in either Cairns, Port Douglas or Palm Cove. By no means a definitive list, here are some of the must-see attractions in Tropical North Queensland.
It's no surprise that a visit to the Great Barrier Reef should be on top of anyone's bucket list. Whether you dive, snorkel or simply view from above in a glass bottom boat, there's more than one way to experience this iconic attraction. The water is clearest in Summer, though there is rarely a season when the reef is not spectacular.
Literally tens of millions of years older than the Amazon and stretching over 1200 square km, the Daintree Rainforest - just north of Port Douglas - is the world's oldest rainforest and is full of fauna and flora that is literally found nowhere else on the planet. It's no wonder why the iconic David Attenborough declared it to be "the most extraordinary place on earth".
Host to such sites as Cassowary Falls and Mossman Gorge (a 56,000 hectare area within the Daintree where you can swim in clear refreshing waters), The Daintree is truly a must-see destination. While you're there, you can also head further north to Cape Tribulation for some exceptional scenery, though be sure to follow any signs concerning swimming.
Fancy something cooler? Then head south for an hour to Kuranda, a mountain village that offers a more pleasant change to sea-level temperatures. Kuranda is known for its stunning Scenic Railway, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Barron Gorge.
As well as ocean based activities on the reef such as snorkelling, diving and deep sea fishing, challenge yourself with white water rafting, hot air ballooning, sailing, kayaking and horseback riding, all within easy reach of Port Douglas, Cairns and Palm Cove.
What is the best way to get around Tropical North Queensland?
It all depends entirely where you go on your next Tropical North Queensland Holiday Package. If it's flexibility and ease that you're looking for, without doubt the best way to get around Cairns is by car, though there are other options. Sunbus runs a public bus service, while the more adventurous can hop on a bike.
Getting around Palm Cove is easy by car, foot or on bicycle, and as it's only 25 minutes from Cairns airport to Palm Cove, grab a hire car, uber or shuttle bus (often complementary with your accommodation) to get to Palm Cove.
The Port Douglas local shuttle is perhaps the quickest way to get around town, though a private vehicle will give you much more flexibility if you're exploring outside Port Douglas by yourself.
Whichever way you travel in Tropical North Queensland, remember to rest often, wear sunscreen and drink a lot of water, as temperatures and humidity can be quite high, especially in Summer.
Whichever Tropical North Queensland Holiday Package you choose, there's always something new to see and do no matter what the time of year.
