The Marrdja Boardwalk, just north of Thornton Beach in Cape Tribulation, showcases lowland, coastal rainforest and adjoining estuaries. This man-made boardwalk offers an elevated walk through the Daintree Rainforest, allowing you to discover the hidden wonders and experience the intricate web of life up close and personal. This looped walk starts and ends at Oliver’s Creek, overlooks Noah Creek and gives you a glimpse into history, 350 million years old. You’ll see living specimens of each significant stage of plant evolution over this period and be enthralled by the constantly changing scenery and vegetation along your adventure. A unique mix of rainforest floor and creek beds brings a variety of wildlife and plant species into view and, if you’re lucky, you might even spot Crocodiles lurking in the waters.
Departing morning or afternoon, you’ll meet your guide at the parking area where the Marrdja Boardwalk begins, off Cape Tribulation Road. Marrdja, meaning ‘rainforest’ or ‘jungle’, showcases the very best of its namesake, and as you meander onto the boardwalk, you’ll be met with the sights, smells and sounds of the Daintree Rainforest. Notice how your senses change as you continue through to the mangroves, and have your guide point out unique native flora that helps this ecosystem thrive. Peer into the waters to spot fish and sometimes eels. At low tide, you’ll see bustling crabs and other crustaceans working away over the muddy banks. As you stroll along the 1.2km path, you’ll follow in dinosaur footprints and see plants and species alive during the Jurassic period. Your experienced guide will share their local knowledge about the rainforest’s ecology, its cultural significance and conservation efforts being made to ensure the Daintree Rainforest is around for generations to come. Midway through your walking tour, you'll reach the Noah Creek lookout, picturesque and full of natural colours. Here you might have the chance to spot Crocodiles hidden in the waters so keep a keen lookout! Along the boardwalk, lookout for the Australian Bush Turkeys, elusive Kingfishers and even rare glimpses of Bush Kangaroos or Goannas. Don’t be deterred by the weather – wet season is when the rainforest truly comes to life. You’ll notice the earth smells richer, flowers are more fragrant and thick mist in the trees gives a chance for more elusive animals to come out and play. Allow 1 hour and 45 minutes to experience the magic of the Marrdja Boardwalk, wear comfortable walking shoes and witness everything the Daintree Rainforest has to offer.
